When people realized that they were confined to their homes for months on end, their attention eventually turned to all the home improvement projects that were on the back burner for so long. You know those projects, the ones that you always said you’d get to “eventually” but never really thought about again. Well, that “eventually” arrived, and many people have been undertaking projects to completely overhaul parts of their home.

Online DIY retailer My Tool Shed used Google Trends and Search Metrics to track which home improvement projects have become most popular. The categories that came up time and time again were DIY searches, paint trends, and kitchen updates. Here’s what people have been up to lately if you’re looking for inspiration.

My Tool Shed reported that searches for DIY projects completely ramped up from 235.4K up to 347.8K, an increase in 48%. People mostly searched for “how to paint” tutorials and guides, with a 44% increase in searches for the phrase. Other top searches included “hot to build” and “hot to fix.” It seems like many people chose to take the opportunity of being at home more than usual to finally tackle some fixer upper projects around the house that may have been lingering in the back of their minds.

Kitchen Updates

Our kitchens have transformed to become much more than just where we prepare and eat our food. Perhaps that’s why this was the most popular part of the home when it came to home renovations lately. The kitchen easily beat out the bedroom, bathroom, garage, and everywhere else in the room.

Searches for kitchen extensions increased by 43% since May 2020. One of the top searches in the whole of last year was kitchen paint. Comparatively, living rooms were the least searched rooms when it came to improvement and DIY project searches.

It might be that the kitchen was a huge source of comfort to many of us during these trying times. After all, it’s where people dabbled with sourdough starters, whipped up Dalgona coffee, and made our imaginative creations to help get us through these unprecedented times.
