Just like fashion, interior design trends come and go, and then often come back around again. Once the peak of style, features like waterbed and wood-panel walls are no longer considered even acceptable in the modern home. But once upon a time, every self respecting interior designer would recommend these. So what gives?
Well, staying true to your personal style and sticking to classic looks can help. Company Joybird surveyed people in all 50 states to get an idea of which trends they’re looking forward to the most and which they’re ready to kick to the curb. Here’s what they found.
About 21% of the survey’s respondents said that they thought 1970’s style would make a comeback in 2020. That doesn’t mean that orange and brown florals are coming back, but elements of 70’s style can be incorporated with newer styles.
Next, about 20% of respondents thought 2000’s style would come back, which would mean neutral palettes and all-white everything. You will certainly find that this was the case all over Instagram. Many of those surveyed said that 1960’s style would come back around. Only 8% of the respondents said that 1990’s style would come back.
When it comes interior style, 26% of the survey respondents said, would be modern interior design, which seems to be staying for a while. Closely followed was minimalistic style coming in with 20%, followed by mid-century modern at 16%. That means we can expect elements like brass pendant lights, Scandinavian dining chairs, and curved sofas.
When it comes to design elements that are on their way out, one of the biggest surprises is a trend that took 2020 by storm. So sorry Joanna Gaines, but the sliding barn door is no longer the top coveted design style!
Though these were a total staple on HGTV, perhaps too many people incorporated them into their homes that everyone got tired of the look. Burnt orange is another trend that seems to be on the decline, closely followed by velvet. Designers are heading more into the direction of contemporary looks like black wrought iron, glass, and french doors.
So what about colors? 26% of the respondents said that they were looking forward to incorporate cobalt blue into their homes. Navy for 17% of the vote, and emerald green closely followed at 16%. Jewel tone colors seem to be coming in strong and muted colors will be fading into the background.
The same can be said for kitchen tiles, cabinets, backsplashes, and also wallpapers. 20% of the survey’s respondents even said that they want to paint their kitchen cabinets in a bold color.
